Open the cartridge and you won't find a single material doing all the work. You'll find a sequence several distinct media, each suited to a different part of what's dissolved, suspended, or drifting through the water traveling from your city's treatment plant to your shower arm. Here is what's inside, and why it's arranged the way it is.
Water doesn't arrive clean
"Clean" and "safe to drink" are not the same standard your skin experiences in a hot shower. Municipal water is treated to be safe but that treatment, along with whatever your water picks up on the way to your home, leaves behind chlorine for odor and taste, fine sediment, and, depending on where you live, a heavy mineral load. A single filter medium is good at solving one of those problems. A sequence is built to address more than one.
The sequence
Water passes through the cartridge in order, not all at once:
- A fiber pre-filter catches sediment and fine particulate first, so nothing coarse reaches the media behind it.
- KDF media a copper-zinc alloy comes next. It's a well-established technology in shower filtration, used primarily to reduce chlorine and inhibit bacterial and scale buildup within the filter bed itself.
- Activated carbon follows, doing the work most people associate with filtration: reducing chlorine taste and odor as water passes through its porous surface.
- Mineral and ceramic media sit toward the end of the sequence. These are traditional inclusions in shower filter design; we describe them plainly rather than attaching claims to them we can't stand behind.
We say "reduce," not "remove," throughout because that's the accurate word. No shower filter, ours included, turns hard, chlorinated water into laboratory-pure water. What it does is measurably improve what reaches your skin and hair, shower after shower.
Built to be replaced
Filter media has a working life. It filters best early and gradually loses capacity as it does its job which is why Dulcis Agua ships with a replacement cartridge system, available on a subscription, so fresh media arrives before the old media stops earning its place in your shower.
A note on what you're holding
The housing is chrome-finished ABS, not solid metal a detail we'd rather state plainly than let you assume otherwise. It's chosen for consistency of finish and long-term resistance to the very water it's designed to treat, standing up to daily use in a wet, mineral-heavy environment without the upkeep solid metal would demand.
Layered filtration isn't a marketing flourish. It's the only honest way to address several different problems in the same stream of water which is exactly what's happening, quietly, every time you turn the shower on.
