HARDNESS IN THE SOUTHWEST
There's a number attached to your tap water that almost no one checks and if you live in the Southwest, it's probably higher than you'd guess.
A number you didn't ask for
Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon (gpg), a measure of dissolved calcium and magnesium. The Water Quality Association's scale runs roughly like this: soft water sits under 3.5 gpg, moderate up to 7, hard from 7 to 10.5, and very hard above that. Most of the country lives somewhere in the middle of that range. The Southwest generally doesn't.
Where you live, probably
Local water utility reports tell a fairly consistent story across the region's major cities:
- Phoenix roughly 10 to 20 grains per gallon, depending on neighborhood and season, squarely in "very hard" territory.
- Las Vegas among the hardest municipal water in the country, generally 16 to 18 grains per gallon, largely a product of Colorado River water traveling through limestone en route to Lake Mead.
- San Antonio around 16 to 17 grains per gallon, drawn heavily from the limestone Edwards Aquifer.
- Dallas–Fort Worth more variable by suburb, generally moderate to hard, with several areas well into "very hard" depending on water source.
Numbers move year to year and block to block your city's annual water quality report will have the current figure for your exact address but the pattern across the region holds.
What hard water does, quietly
None of this makes water unsafe. Hardness is a mineral fact, not a contamination one. What it does is accumulate, invisibly, in the places you'd rather it didn't: as a film on skin after the water evaporates, as buildup at the ends of hair, as the reason a bar of soap won't quite lather the way it does elsewhere. It's cumulative and easy to attribute to something else entirely a new shampoo, the desert air, getting older until you spend a week somewhere with softer water and notice the difference.
What a filter can and can't do
A shower filter is not a whole-home softener, and we won't pretend otherwise. It doesn't run your water through an ion-exchange tank or strip out dissolved minerals at the molecular level. What it does, positioned right at the showerhead, is reduce chlorine and fine sediment in the water actually touching your skin and hair the last few feet of the journey, which is the part you feel.
